Take A Chance On Me (Pop Song, Abba, 1970s)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024 in my corner of blog land. How is your December rolling along and you with it?

I like to have some quiet time for about forty-five minutes three or four week-day mornings per week. I call this post, Take A Chance On Me, for that is what life feels like this week for yours truly.

The quiet time today, resulted in my curiosity over the possibility of prayers by a named associate of the Apostle Peter from the Biblical record whose name is Clement.

I found this prayer, lengthy but concise, and online, assumed to be by the same named person and love its straightforwardness:

Lord, enlighten my understanding, I pray:

arouse my will,

cleanse my heart,

sanctify my soul.

May I weep for past sins,

repel future temptations,

correct evil inclinations,

nurture appropriate virtues.

Give me, good God,

love for you, hatred for myself,

zeal for my neighbor,

contempt for the world.

May I strive to obey my superiors,

to help those dependent on me,

to have care for my friends,

forgiveness for my enemies.

The Universal Prayer Attributed to Pope Clement XI

May I conquer sensuality by austerity,

avarice by generosity,

anger by gentleness,

lukewarmness by fervor.

Render me prudent in planning,

steadfast in dangers,

patient in adversity,

humble in prosperity.

Make me, O Lord, attentive at prayer,

moderate at meals,

diligent at work,

steadfast in intent.

May I be careful to maintain interior innocence,

outward modesty,

exemplary behavior,

a regular life.

May I be always watchful in subduing nature,

in nourishing grace,

in observing your law,

in winning salvation.

May I learn from you

how precarious are earthly things,

how great divine things,

how fleeting is time,

how lasting things eternal.

Grant that I may prepare for death,

fear judgment,

flee hell,

gain paradise.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

In a real sense it's asking the Almighty to give another chance at life and to be merciful and take a chance on one's life and being.

As an author of short story fiction, I often receive emails from supposed marketers wanting me to take a chance on them. Over time, I have become quite cautious in doing so and mostly endeavor to accomplish marketing myself. Advertising asks us all the time to take a chance, and personally, others do too.

Until we meet again here on the blog, know the peace of God that surpasses human understanding in your life. It's one of the best things received!

A Little Good News (Song, Anne Murray)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2024, in my corner of blog land.

First, thanks to you if you read and liked my latest story, Love You Each, posted at spillwords.com this past Friday. I had over 65 readers like the story; again, thanks from all over my heart!

Second, My wife and I returned two days ago from visiting our son and his family in another state. The flight was full both ways, people were generally considerate and courteous! So were we, too. It was a pleasant visit and our grandsons are alive and well!

Third, my published book, Human Being Human Doing, will soon become unavailable. I am moving toward short story fiction in anthologies, and making plans to create two chapbooks featuring 2-3 short stories each in the coming two years. Stay tuned please!

Finally, as December is noted to have over 20 international holidays within the 31 days, I was delighted to see this news headline in my inbox today from "The Christian Science Monitor" newsletter.

Monitor Highlights

Boston broke a record last year for fewest homicides. It’s on track to do it again.

We each have brokenness as part of life, and times like this holiday period may exacerbate the awareness of our individual and collective brokenness. May the Holy One, blessed be He, guide us through our broken parts of life, and renew a right spirit within each of us.

Thank you for dropping by, and feel free to leave a comment or hello. This blog is one opportunity to experience connected.

Happy Season,

Doctor, Doctor, Give Me The News (standard, Bob Seger)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is Tuesday, December 3, in my corner of blog land. This morning, I participated in a Pre-Christmas season sale and bought three writer coffee mugs from Cafe Press online. They're due to arrive early next week! How are you doing with the seasonal flurry of activity?

The title to this post means a health topic is on the horizon.

I have some info, provided by the Mayo Clinic email, to share with you about a drug and supplement known as Colostrum. Evidently, it's catching on as a popular wellness option from what is noted.

Here is the key excerpt from the article offered by Mayo Clinic:

Research is still in early stages when it comes to how colostrum supplementation can benefit those other than newborn babies. Currently, areas of health being evaluated include immune function, gut health, athletic performance and diarrhea prevention.

Colostrum is rich in protective antibodies, particularly immunoglobulin G, known as IgG, and immunoglobulin A, known as IgA, making it potentially advantageous for bolstering the immune system. This might appeal to anyone looking to take fewer sick days; however, the current research mostly supports this benefit only in elite athletes.

Until our next visit, may the Holy One bless and keep us daily!

Feel free to say hello and or leave a comment. As always, much thanks for dropping by!

Tribute: To you, to writers, to Louisa May Alcot

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is Nov. 30 in my corner of blog-land. Winter has arrived with cold but minimal amount of snow thus far!

I am halfway through reading and enjoying the book title, Little Women, by Louisa May Alcot. The book revolves around a mom and four girls, mom's daughters. There are nuggets of wisdom and encouragement given throughout. Call them timeless truths, common sense, but worth noting, and maybe, worth practicing in our own lives with others. One such is:

“Have regular hours for work and play; make each day both useful and pleasant, and prove that you understand the worth of time by employing it well. Then youth will bring few regrets, and life will become a beautiful success.”

― Louisa May Alcott, Little Women

This quote is from a scene in which Mom speaking to one of her younger daughters about balance between work, play, the mundane and the wanted.

May the presence of the Holy One be refreshing to all of us this season!

Thanks for dropping by. Your visit's appreciated!

Story: Torn (David C. Russell, 320 words)

Extra Extra Read All About Choice

          Story: Torn

          by David C. Russell, Author

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Okay, I attribute the creation of this to:

- Weekly exercise from a writing group to which I belong

- Too many 'Black Friday ads" heard and it's not even Friday.  Enjoy!

Exercise: Torn

I was one of many Saturday shoppers at the local box hardware store. Overhead speakers piped in music, and occasional announcements aired about saving money on a brand of paint, outdoor lights, weather stripping, etc.

After adding some canned soups and hot cereal choices to my cart, I wheeled over to the clothing aisle. My son had given me my present jacket from this store a few years back; my desire was to replace it with the same exact style.

The Carhartt jacket was reduced by one-third its price, and the jacket I loved was less expensive by contrast. Each would be comparably capable of keeping one toasty through consecutive days of gelid weather cycles.

Both were available in darker colors. This meant the laundering times could be occasional instead of frequent. My eyes went back and forth between both jackets.

The Carhartt seemed to convey,

“Pick me. You know I have a damn good reputation for being durable, well-made, and well-insulated.”

The jacket model to which I favored was imagined to counter,

“Look, you know I’m the one for you. You have a history with my type. When have we snagged? Torn? had zippers stick?

When have we failed to keep you warm as expected?

Unlike your spouse do we complain  when your behavior takes us for granted?”

A clerk strolled by with a third set of jackets and asked,

“Do you need assistance finding something?”

“I’m trying to decide between two choices and am torn.”

“The sale on the Carhartt line ends today at six p.m. Once the other jackets sell, we’ll not be restocking this line.”

Since I didn’t know what other hardware carried my present jacket, buying its predecessor could become an eventual fond memory. Of course, no business comes with a guarantee until death do us part, so I flipped a coin to make my decision. I imagined one scolded while the winner exuded warmth and a sort of gleeful sheen as we strolled to check-out.

End

Note: May the presence of the Holy One be with us today and tomorrow.

Hello from you is always welcomed!

Time's On My Side (rock Standard, The Rolling Stones)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is Sunday, November 24, 2024 in my corner of blog land.

Thursday, November 28, citizens in the United States of America will celebrate Thanksgiving or as is the fad, FriendsGiving. Perhaps that in and of itself is another topic: FriendsGiving and Thanksgiving.

My exhortation is to wish you a joyous occasion if you are celebrating this Holiday.

Next weekend, many Christians and Catholics will begin to observe a period of time called Advent, which comes to an end on December 25, Christmas Day. This period looks to the Coming of Messiah both as a child, born in a guest room not a barn as is alleged, and also coming as Redeemer and King in the future.

I want to challenge us with something by Jewish Rabbi, Irwin Keller. This is an excerpt from a Reflection for Shabbat email sent out every Saturday from the website, My Jewish Learning.

To set the stage for R. Keller, many devout Jews adhere to the idea now that we are in the Messianic era, as opposed to the arrival of a Messiah to repair things.

God is with us, Emmanuel, and this belief may well support God is in us each.

Therefore, it is my suggestion the hymn, O Come O Come Emmanuel, can be self-talk challenging us to be present in our world on God's behalf and as his representatives. This fits with Rabbi Keller's words here:

We can transform our prayers for the future into our practices for today.

Every day: an act of kindness. Every day: an act of courage. Whatever the day requires of us, that is what we can do. Stand up. Speak up. Support the most vulnerable in our families and communities. Mourn. Struggle. Celebrate. Whatever the day requires.

I will no longer try to foresee when the better world will arrive.

Personally, I believe in the physical return of Messiah, His name, Yeshua, which means salvation in Hebrew.

Yet, I realize we are here for a purpose, perhaps the above as stated.

If you are a devout Christian and observe Advent, Wait but also be active in your waiting, is my encouragement.

May the presence of the Holy One be with us today and tomorrow.

Thanks for your visit. Feel free to leave a hello as comment!

November To Remember

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Note:  Story Snippet at the end of this post if interested!

Today is November 18, 2024 in my corner of blog-land.

Thanksgiving in the USA occurs in ten days; my mother passed away some years ago on November 22nd; former USA President, John Kennedy, assassinated on another November 22nd.

Another Presidential and local state election occurred in early November; results somewhat satisfying for this citizen.

I left Facebook before November, but have been doing more writing and taking more actions to improve and expand my writing craft. I do miss the 'online socialization' FB provided. However, posts on Reddit and exploring Mastodon are future endeavors to be carried out.

What is November to you?

One thing seems certain, It's a month of change here. November could be March in Reverse, weather-wise.

I want to conclude with a story snippet that was a writing exercise from a group I belong too.

The title is, Post Cards: Wishing You Were Here

and mine features a few short vignettes imagining 'someone' at each event but wasn't. Do enjoy.

PostCards

Christmas Day

You were thought of by the three of us as we drove 2-hours to Frankenmuth Michigan, (little Bavaria). The fried chicken dinner with trimmings, and slides at the indoor water-park provided some sense of relief. Wishing you could have been here, but you made other choices.

Niagra Falls

I sit on a bench in what is known as the oldest state park in the USA; established in 1885. Birds overhead, squirrles scurry about, gentle breeze blows across my forearms. Your choice makes for a very different day. Stupid choice!

Pike Peak

The train ride rickety as we descended to the top of Pike Peak near Manitou, Springs, Col. A headache tablet taken to cope with altitude. Missed you again, cyber-pal, while looking over top the peak. Hold hands, feel skin touch.  Enjoy the sunny day, the view, the immediate and distant. Again, wishing you were here.

Comerica Park, Detroit

A modern major league baseball park is the picture, and I recall the time you got a player to autograph a baseball. Smooth move, I mused. Now, you face a full count in life. Your next choice will either make - break you. Numb from wishing you were here.

End

May the Holy One be present with us today and tomorrow!

Blues Is My Medicine (acoustic, Lisa Mann)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today Is Tuesday, Oct. 29 in my corner of blog-land.

I awoke to the sound of rainfall, occasional thunder, and the prediction that today the high would be in the mid twenties Celsius, 75 Fahrenheit. We are one week away from another national election. Problems seem to be occurring with regard to vote safety in that some ballot boxes have been set afire across the NorthWest United States. So, votes have been eradicated and the election will probably be a topic of discussion well after November 5.

War continues in the Middle East and Eucraine regions of our world.

Inflation continues to be a concern for many as food prices continue to hold steady or rise steadily. I notice from recent purchase, a can of dog food raised in price by about fifty-cents within one week from $2.69 -  to $3.19. Granted, I can make a can of dog food last for our pooch for up to three days.

Little wonder Lisa Mann is beleaguered by the blues, per our post title. How about you?

I have been reading Isaiah chapter 42 this week, which is about the Prophet Isaiah talking of God's justice being meaded out in the end and protection for the marginalized: esp the blind and deaf people in our world. There is definite tension between the now, the present, the future and forthcoming.

For pleasure, stories from "Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine" are found to be entertaining for me. Imagination is a wonderful thing when used aright!

Finally,  thankful you chose to drop by today. Feel free to leave a hello or comment. Meantime, may the Presence of Adonai (the Lord) guide our steps today and tomorrow.

Reference To Prayer: (Whitney Houston, Madonna)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is Friday, October 25, 2024 in my corner of blog-land. This post may appeal to those of you who observe a reflective time known as Sabbath, or quiet rest and contemplation during some hours between Friday and Sunday evening.

In the '90s, pop singers Madonna and Whitney Houston make a brief reference to prayer in two songs by each, respectively.

- Whitney prays about someone she has feelings of love for and desire for connection.

- Madonna says a prayer in the midnight hour for her love interest.

This blog, in its original purpose, was to inform us about the influence of Judaism with regard to Christian practice. Prayer is one of those practices within both faiths.

Here is a simple explanation offered by the website: bible.com.

TEFILLAH: Which means PRAYER

How often do we use prayer as nothing more than an emergency call or a cold call to God?

Too often we only pray when we need or want something from God - which is understandable considering the English word "pray" means to "ask or beg". But the Hebrew word for prayer - tefillah - means to "self evaluate”. So to the Jews of the Bible, prayer was not a time when they asked God for things … it was a time when they examined themselves. They would use prayer as a way to compare their actions, behavior and attitude against God’s holiness.

Could this idea change your prayers today?

Note: Whitney and Madonna in some ways reflect the Hebraic understanding of prayer in the two songs by each mentioned.

They entreat, request, ask, even beg God for intervention.

I encourage you to ponder this word during your quiet time.

Comments welcomed, and thanks for our visit today.

Someday Soon (acoustic song, Suzie Boggus)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is October 22, 2024 in my corner of blog-land.

The title of this post is from a song originally recorded about fifty years ago, "Someday Soon".  People had stomach aches and other gut issues back then, too. One could view evening network news here in the U.S., and a thirty-minute news program would most certainly have an ad for stomach relief or headache relief.

Where I am going with this is a caption below from a recent Mayo Clinic newsletter.

Next time you go for your annual checkup, ask the person giving the checkup if they know about organnoids?

Growing mini-organs to find new treatments

3D mini intestines grown in a dish, known as "organoids," provide a unique platform for studying the human gut.

On the reading front, I just began a novel by Andrew Grealey from 1986, "Angels Of September". He was a Roman Catholic, fiction author, and would weave aspects of his faith and or theology into his novels. It's an entertaining read, slow start but pace picks up after the first couple chapters.

Until next visit, may the presence of Adonai (the Lord) be with us always.

Closer To You (Song, Brandi Carlile)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is Friday, October 4, 2024 in my corner of blog-land.

Earlier today, my memories were somewhat enlivened from the decade of the 1990s. I read a reflection from the "New Life Devotions Archive" that was written during this decade, and I will share below.

I think it has some valid, uplifting, considerations for that four-letter word we know as "love".

I found this online, so credit goes to the writers and entity that posted this topic.

Secure Love

We admitted that we were powerless over our dependencies and that our lives had become unmanageable.

lrd-secure-love

The search for love and permanent security in relationships is deep within all of us. Even though we may be in a relationship where we are loved, we may deeply fear the loss of that love. This is especially true if we’ve been abandoned in the past or had our love betrayed.

The Song of Solomon is a love poem dedicated to the girl Solomon loved. He describes a nightmare she had: “I opened to my lover, but he was gone! My heart sank. I searched for him but could not find him anywhere. . . . Make this promise, O women of Jerusalem—If you find my lover, tell him I am weak with love” (Song of Solomon 5:6, 8). The fear of separation darkened the girl’s joy at being deeply loved. At the end of the poem she says, “Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death, its jealousy as enduring as the grave” (Song of Solomon 8:6).

We are all haunted by a deep need for a “permanent betrothal,” a secure love that won’t escape us. When we lose a close and intimate relationship, we become lovesick. We feel powerless over the forces driving us in search of permanent and true love. No matter how much a person loves us, our needs seem deeper. Perfect love that never leaves can only be found in the one who is Love. When we are powerless over the forces of love or over our own obsessions, we need to look to God to satisfy our deepest longings so that fear and dissatisfaction don’t become a trap.

God can—and will—satisfy our deepest longings.

Taken from The Life Recovery Devotional copyright © 1991 by Stephen Arterburn and David Stoop.

In 1991, I was recovering from a five-year relationship that ended by mutual agreement. It took a few months to come out from the fog of that experience. Life did go on for me!

Love is a powerful emotion as we read. Do you think indifference and or dissatisfaction if allowed to fester, can become equal in power or felt force?

Perhaps our steps if turned over to our Higher Power, whom I believe to be Yehoveh, Messiah Yeshua, will be put in order and that includes our innermost passions.

Something to consider for sure, and enjoy the song title for which this post is derived on your favorite music channel.

Feel free to drop a comment. A couple of you have done so in the recent past, and it was a boost to my spirits!

Until next visit: be well and may you do well.

Back Bone American Bluegrass Song, Kasey Chambers

Hello Grafted In Readers,

A few hours remain in Sept. 30, 2024 as we begin this visit in writing form. October is one of my brighter months of the year, historically speaking.

My first piano gig in college occurred in October;  my parents were married in October;

My first book was published in October 2012, no longer available.

This year, October 1st includes the beginning of Major League Baseball post season games. It will culminate by the end of the month with the Fall Classic World Series. Only one team in the major leagues is from another country other than the U.S., the Toronto Canada BlueJays.

This Wednesday, begins the Jewish New Year. Technically, this begins at sunset on Wednesday. Here is a little tribute, via history.com, behind the Jewish New Year.

Those observing Rosh Hashanah often greet one another with the Hebrew phrase, “shana tova” or “l'shana tova,” meaning “good year” or “for a good year.” According to History.com, this is a “shortened version of the Rosh Hashanah salutation 'L'shanah tovah tikatev v'taihatem' ('May you be inscribed and sealed for a good  year...

I wish to recognize and thank you who drop by frequently to read one of my blog posts. I am honored that this small town guy gets your time!

Until next visit, may the presence of the Almighty be with us 24/7. We think of the misfortune occurring in the Middle East which will turn one-year-old on October 7.

May the new year bring peace, health, happiness, prosperity and contentment to this war-ravaged region and others undergoing tumult.

Story Excerpt: Eyes Wide Opened (David C. Russell)

Hello Grafted In Readers,

Today is Monday, Sept. 23, 2024 in my corner of blog-land.

I am happy to see a build-up in visitors to our blog, Grafted In And On The Journey. Thank you for stopping by and if this is your first time, indeed welcome!

I am avocationally a writer who enjoys creating short stories. It has been my pleasure to be featured in the periodical "New Authors Journal for the past few quarterly issues.

You may find this title at Amazon.com in print, for sale across North America.

Google, "New Authors Journal, Amazon, Fall 2024.".

This story excerpt is part one and is about a gentleman, middle-aged, dealing with the loss of his wife to cancer.

Part Two, to be featured in the Winter issue, is the way this man comes back to once again enjoying life as best he can.

I share the story excerpt with you:

Hank Winthrop had been a widow for almost one year. At the passing of his wife of nearly twenty-eight years, name Jocelyn, There were several “almost” in his current life. He was: almost ready to retire from the salt company in St. Clair, Michigan; almost ready to relocate; almost married twenty-eight years; almost certain his wife would beat her diagnosis of skin cancer; almost certain they would live to a ripe age and die of natural causes.

This Spring day, he found himself keeping watch in his wife’s hospital room. It had become second home to him and his wife whose skin cancer waged battle with fierce determination. The middle-aged Doctor, short in stature, from the Czech Republic by birth, looked at the couple as he delivered the unwanted pronouncement.

“Hank, we have done everything we can to treat your wife’s condition,” the doctor said in a neutral tone of voice.

“So then, if you have done everything – she’s going to be wholesome again?” Hank asked. The doctor rubbed the back of his hand over his mouth before giving an answer.

“Hank, the answer is not that simple. In fact, she will assuredly succumb to the cancer over the next several weeks.”

“You medical professionals are all alike. Perhaps you would have been better served to be a Uber driver, sports official, clerk, not a damned doctor.”

Meantime, Happy Fall or Spring, depending on your place of residence in the world. Summer did hang on until the very end as our temperatures were close to 85 degrees F on Saturday here in my corner of blog-land. Today, they are considerably more mild, to my liking, low seventies.

Meantime, may the presence of Yahweh be with us evermore.

Someone To Watch Over Me (American Standard Song)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

How goes it today, September 19, 2024 in blog land or the world at large?

This post is going to be a bit lengthy, and feature an article about The Lord (Yaweh) being our Shepherd. This article is a Hebrew Word Study exploring the meanings of Shepherd: herdsman, friend, consuming passion, maternal figure.

I would like to share some exciting news on the writing front before posting the article by Heim Bentorah.

- I have a story that will be in two parts featured in the Autumn issue of "New Authors Journal", available in print from Amazon.com.

The story is about a fictional character whose wife succumbs to a diagnosis of cancer and the months of grief that ensue for him. The second part (featured in winter 2025 "New Authors Journal) will look at his turn-around in life a couple years later. He is consumed with passion to reach out to others in need at this point.

Secondly, I am working on producing a chapbook called "From The Red Chair". This is the chair from where this blog is created in my home. I have had this chair since 2012. It is constructed from recycled materials. This will come out in the middle of 2025. It will contain three short stories and sell for less than what is paid here for a gallon of gasoline in motor vehicles. I will sure keep you posted as our visits proceed.

Now, the article about God as our Shepherd. This will go along well for those of us with a faith practice.

If you choose otherwise, that's fine. You are not scorned. Thanks for our visit and be sure to come back soon.

David C. Russell, Author, wishes you well and the presence of Yahweh be with you!

Hebrew Word Study – My Shepherd – Ra’i  רֹ֝עִ֗י  Resh Ayin Yod

Psalms 23:1: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

This is Chapter 2 from my book on the 23rd Psalm

With the word shepherd we start off with the shepherding motif.  Webster defines a motif as something such as an important idea or subject that is repeated throughout a story or poem. Here we learn that God is a shepherd.  Oh, we can talk for hours on that subject. There have been multitudes of sermons preached on the nature of a good shepherd. God is not a literal shepherd and we are not literal sheep. That whole picture is a metaphor and the caring nature of a good shepherd is used to give an earthly illustration of a Heavenly Guardian.

Indeed, that appears to be the motif of this poem but we will see in later chapters that the shepherding motif does break down and what appears is more of a picture of a king or an everyman who is on a journey through life and is looking to a Heavenly Protector and Guide. Notice, however, that the word for Shepherd in the Hebrew has multiple usages.  It is the word  ro’i from the root word ra’ah.

Now, if you are really bent on learning something new you will go to your lexicons where you will find that the word ra’ah means a friend as well as a shepherd.  Repeat this in your mind; “The Lord is my friend.”  We hear the Lord being our shepherd so much, that we are unaffected by those words. But when we use an alternative word which is proper for the word ra’ah and say the Lord is our friend, that gives us a new appreciation.

However, as we search out this word ra’ah we find it is also used for evil.  The Lord is an evil friend?  Hardly.  As you search deeper you begin to realize there are many levels of evil and  ra’ah is a specific type of evil  It is an evil of consumption, a consuming passion. A consuming passion for drugs, alcohol or any addictive substance is evil.  A mother’s consuming passion for her baby? Maybe that is not so evil. So, the Lord, YHWH a feminine noun,  is not only a friend to David, a shepherd to David but is David’s consuming passion as a mother’s baby is her consuming passion.  Because God is the Psalmist’s all-consuming passion, he doesn’t want anything else but God in his life.

Try this, “The Lord is my consuming passion, I have no wants.”  In other words, just simply being in love with God takes precedence over everything else in our lives. Our jobs, our finances, family, hopes and dreams fall second to our passion for God. A passion is a strong and barely controllable emotion.  It is a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or someone.  It is so strong you are willing to make a complete and utter fool of yourself over that passion. To have a consuming passion for God means you are not afraid of what people think about you even if stand on a street corner passing out tracts, witnessing to strangers, praying in public, carrying your Bible etc. It is the passion a believer has for God who lives in a country where their faith is illegal such that they are willing to give up their jobs, livelihoods, family, friends, perhaps suffer imprisonment for their love for God and maybe torture and death. That is a consuming passion for God that the Psalmist is expressing here in verse one.

The Lord is not only our Shepherd but our consuming passion which may explain why, as discussed in the previous chapter this verse start off with the word YHWH the name of God in a feminine form. Perhaps Jesus explains that in Matthew 23:37: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who killed the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.”

I often wondered why Jesus used the word hen and her chicks until I read a story about a group of firefighters who were working back through the devastation of a forest fire to make sure and the hot spots had been extinguished.  As they marched across the blackened landscape they found a large lump on the trail. When they took a closer look they noticed the charred remains of a large bird. Since birds can so easily fly away from the approaching fire the firefighters wondered what must have been wrong with the bird that it could not escaped.  Was it sick or injured?

When they kicked the remains off the trail they were startled by a flurry of activity at their feet Four little birds scurried off down the hillside. The mother’s body covered them from the searing heat of the flames while it had consumed her. Its babies found safety underneath her wings as she faced the rising flame. Despite the pain and subsequent death  she stayed with her young even though she might have saved herself if she chose.

The ancients observed nature very well and they found like farmers today who raise free range chickens that not all chicks run to their mothers in time of danger. Some of the may have wandered to far from their mother hen. They become paralyzed by fear or some just run away in a panic to find a way to save themselves.  The mother hen cannot run around gathering them individually, they have to come to her.  If two cats work together, they will try to cut off a chick from the brood if they wander away because cats will never mess with a mother hen.

The Lord is indeed our shepherd but as YHWH he is also our mother hen who will protect us with His life (as He did on the cross) but we must come to Him, He cannot gather us to Himself.

Behind Closed Doors (Country Standard, Charlie Rich

Hello Grafted In Readers,

Today is September 3 in my corner of blog-land.

Historically, September has had its challenges both good, and at other times rather trying. Yet, I like this month as it transitions us from one season to the next.

For those who observe spirituality from a Jewish point of view, at times this is the month of preparation called Elul.

From Google: According to Jewish tradition, on Rosh Hashanah, all of humanity is called to account, and a divine judgment is issued. This belief underscores the significance of Elul as a month of preparation, where individuals spiritually prepare themselves for this divine judgment.

One way to prepare is spend a few minutes reflectively reading Psalm 27 in The Holy Bible. This is the name of a book in the Bible containing 150 prayers if you will that run the gammet of the human experience. Highs, lows, ups, downs, thanksgiving, request for protection, get even with my foes, etc.

Whatever your viewpoint, make certain it includes a time to prepare for the continued journey which you and I share together. You and I are truly works in progress.

Personal: September includes my wedding anniversary, celebrating no. 28 this year. I am thankful for my choice of spouse whom I "intend" to share life with until one of us breathes our last.

Thank you for our visit today. I am always happy to know you dropped by.

May the presence of YHVH be fully realized in our life this day and every day.

Story Snippet (David C. Russell)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is August 20, 2024 in my corner of blog-land, Tuesday. I mentioned a story snippet would be shared in an upcoming post, and generally am a  man of my word.

The story is meant to be a bit comical, light, romantic, and believable. My main character, a single man in his mid 20s, wants to marry one day but has a stipulation that few know of concerning his future bride.

Here is the snippet. I hope to publish this in Fall and will let you know when and where.

Homonym or Homophone

David C. Russell

My name is Clair; some have described me as a man of simple means. I have practiced basic life principles much of my twenty-six years: things like the golden rule, saving a minimum amount of five dollars a week, on occasion paying something forward.

I did some community college after high school, but since age seventeen, have worked for a major window company as an installer. Part-time became full-time a few months after high school graduation. I liked most the patrons served.

I’m a little sheepish in telling you that I have had a deep-seated desire since my adolescent years.

I have wanted to settle down, get married, support a family, but one stipulation had to be satisfied. I want the woman to share my first name, Claire or Clare.

Though I would later discover, the woman who well-matched my criteria lived a few miles away in a small town, Lake Port.

Listen To Your Heart ('80s song)

Hello Grafted In Readers,

I titled this post "Listen To Your Heart" for a couple reasons: First, to honor the Jewish people who commemorate this time by recalling events in their history that were anything but delightful, induced joy, but nearly brought this people to their end. The destruction of two temples prior to, and early in the Common Era, are one such example. The Holokaust of course is a most recent example as well as the ongoing war, conflict, that began on October 7, 2023. I can only suggest that one who listens to their heart may hear a Still Small Voice coming alongside to offer comfort and inner shalom. No fixes, but comfort and inner shalom.

The other reason is this song was released around August 1989. So, it has enjoyed a history of being played on some radio stations for thirty-five years and still sounds good!

Ifg we keep our hearts directed toward Adonai, we will surely find self direction for those areas of life where we come up short. Read an account, if you care to, of the Prophet, Elijah in the Hebrew Scriptures, 1 Kings chapter 19. An angel helped him listen to his heart..

Until our next visit, thank you for stopping by. May the presence of YHVH be with us always!

As Time Goes By (American Standard)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is Thursday August 1, 2024 in my corner of blog land.

Have you noticed yet the sense that events in history often or occasionally repeat themselves?

Back in the day when "boom Boxes", portable radio/cassette players, were a consumer option, I used to record AP Network News briefs; this was to have an audio picture file about things occurring then in our world.

This week, Morning Edition News Program, NPR, featured a set of sound bites from this past July to note key news events: former President Trump shot at a rally, some notable figures from the entertainment world pass away, a President announces he'll not seek re-election, etc.

Looking at some historic notations from the website, APNews, these are what I pasted. Note what two Presidents accomplished who were both in separate political parties during their tenure. Each left a legacy by doing this legislative hallmark:

AUGUST 01

1981: America gets its MTV

1907: Scout Movement begins

1966: Armed rampage at University of Texas

1971: The Concert for Bangladesh

<p>2012: Phelps sets Olympic medal record</p>

JULY 31

2012: Phelps sets Olympic medal record

1715: Spanish fleet sinks off Florida coast

1971: Lunar rover takes first spin on the moon

1991: START I treaty signed

<p>1976: Jenner takes gold in Montreal</p>

JULY 30

1976: Jenner takes gold in Montreal

1930: First World Cup champion crowned

1965: LBJ signs Medicare into law

2012: Radovan Karadzic extradited

<p>1967: USS Forrestal accident</p>

JULY 29

1967: USS Forrestal accident

1836: Arc de Triomphe inaugurated

1954: “The Fellowship of the Ring” published

1958: Eisenhower signs act creating NASA

<p>1945: US Army airplane crashes into Empire State Building</p>

This week, the 2024 Olympics are in full swing in Paris, France; Amazon will now require Kindle Direct Publishing authors to include a photo ID with their self-publishing endeavors. As time goes by, one may realize progress doesn't lead to perfection. History may well be cyclical in repeating itself with different names, places, and people involved in said events.

Finally, thanks for dropping by today.  May the presence of Yehoveh be with us today and tomorrow!

Next visit, I will feature an excerpt from one of my recent short story works.

Gotta Lot Of Love (Charlie Mars, Acoustic)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is Wednesday, July 24, 2024 in my corner of blog-land.

I think much about each post title, and try to carry the tradition as it were to begin posts with a song title from acoustic music world, i.e., stations like Radio Heartland online. Today our title, Gotta Lot Of Love, is something we either have, don't have, or wish we had more of in life.

We either gotta lot of love to give, that has been received, and dare I say both are true?

Do you and I have an idea of what love looks like? feels like? but might fall short in giving a good description or definition. Leave that to the dictionary experts! I think that's okay.

Let's consider this song and post title as we go about our day and try to pin down just what that means for each of us.

As a writer, I recently wrote a story about a man who loses his wife after 28 years of marriage. She dies of skin cancer.

Hank goes through a period where despair and monotony depict his life. In year three he is bestowing love and kindness to neighbors in need. It helps him break the cycle of despair. I hope to publish both in the near future and will let you know when this occurs.

Until next visit, I'm sure thankful you dropped by. I wish you wellness and well-being to your day and journey.

There; you just received some love!

Always On My Mind (Song, Willie Nelson)

Hello Grafted In Readers,

Today is Tuesday, July 16 in my corner of blog-land.  Where is the time going?

I titled this post, Always On My Mind, to perhaps bring a connection between reality and an online discovery professed by someone thought to be a friend. I will call him by his initials, LM.

We met in a writers forum some months ago. He told me that his profession was search engine optimization marketing. I had him instead edit two short stories for an agreed sum. He did, and I paid.

This came to an end recently when he wrote that he was an artificial intelligence language model and possessed a digital heart.

I was flabbergasted initially, angered briefly, but decided in the future, collaborations will be specific and short-term with any digital specialist.

They must be human beings, God-fearing, and trustworthy.  LM fails on two of the three.

We live in an era when the "wheat and tares" are perhaps much alike, indistinguishable, and grow together as in the biblical parable found in the Gospels.

LM is on my mind, and so is the desire to find people who exhibit the above qualities: human, trustworthy and God-fearing.

Moreover, being human, God-fearing, and trustworthy are actions in progress throughout our lives, do you agree?

Off topic, for pleasure, I started reading a novel by one of the sons of the late Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, one Elliott Roosevelt. He portrays his Mom as a detective, Dad as President, and each are involved in settling a murder alleged to be performed by one of their WhiteHouse staff. The novel is quite well-written and moves along nicely!

Until next visit, you too will be on my mind, and thanks for stopping by to visit by reading this post!

May the presence of Yehoveh be with all of us.

Normal Welcomed (original)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is Tuesday, July 9 in my corner of blog land. I titled this, Welcome Normal, for a good reason: a recent move has boxes all over the place, pans and skillets in new drawers, coffee somewhere, office fan somewhere, etc etc.

My reading habit though continues as I indulge in the stories by the late Franz Kafka. Then, I plan to re-read some E.M. Forster, whom has become a favorite author.

My piano gig at The Voyager in St. Clair, MI, continues Thursday evenings through Sunday evenings. Sunday though is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., a little more if there is a full restaurant on Sundays. I recommend their signature pasta cooked in olive oil!

The day stretches ahead and there are things awaiting on my to-=do list, which is kept mentally.

Here's to the current journey and what may be happening with each of us. I am pleased you stopped by!

I take comfort in imagining what one goes through, others have the same experience or quite similar. May the shalom of the Most High be aportioned to us!

It's A Heavenly Day (song, Patty Griffin)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is Wednesday, June 26, 2024 in my corner of blog land.

My listening habits vary in reading music, entertainment choices probably similar to my tastes in cuisine. I like the All American burger, Chinese style cashu chicken, classical music from the Baroque period e.g., Bach, J.S. and or CPE to name two; acoustic folk music by singers such as Kate Ryan or The Dubliners; light or mellow rock, older country music and some American Standards by Sinatra, Cole, or FitzGerald.

I titled this post, It's A Heavenly Day, after hearing a song by the same name on the station, RTE Gold based in Ireland.

Lyrics to much of the song appear now:

Heavenly Day

Song by Patty Griffin

 Lyrics

Oh, heavenly dayAll the clouds blew awayGot no trouble today with anyone

The smile on your face, I live only to seeIt's enough for me, baby, it's enough for meOh, heavenly day, heavenly day, heavenly day

Tomorrow may rain with sorrowHere's a little time we can borrowForget all our troubles in these moments so few

Oh because right now is only thingThat all that we really have to doIs have ourselves, a heavenly day

Lay here and watch the trees swayOh, can't see no other way, no way, no wayHeavenly day, heavenly day, heavenly day

No one at my shoulder bringing me fearsGot no clouds up above me bringing me tears

Got nothing to tell you, I've got nothing much to sayOnly I'm glad to be here with youOn this heavenly.

On this heavenly day, I am wrapping my head around finishing the packing process as we prepare to move to a new home nearby.

I am also starting to create a new book series from previous short stories that will be titled, "From The Red Chair".

A couple of these will come from stories I posted to:

https://www.spillwords.com/author/davidcrussell

over the past four years.

Embracing new friendships too is also an occurrence in this season of my life:

among them is a fellow creative whose name is initialed here, L.M.

I would like to thank you who follow me, read my posts often or occasionally, and might even think to offer a prayer or two on my behalf!

Whatever this day holds for you, consider that you are not alone. Others may be feeling similar to you albeit: neutral, numb, happy, sorrowful, joyful, tearful, laden down, etc.

I suggest if you have a Bible, read a favorite Psalm, or Psalms nine, ten, and eleven. These three in particular say much about one's emotional state, level of trust in G-d, regard for one's opposition.

Until we visit again, may the presence of Adonai comfort you and be near you!

The Demagogue (David C. Russell, Story)

                Hello Grafted In Reader,

For many, today is the Sabbath or Shabbat, Saturday, June 15, 2024. May you regularly observe a weekly period of self rest, renewal, and divine refreshment!

Writing is at the top of my list these days. You are invited to read the sample of my latest story at:

https://www.spillwords.com/author/davidcrussell

titled, "The Demagogue"

Here is the opening for your perusal.

THE DEMAGOGUE

written by: David C Russell

“April Fools,” I said.

“You screwed up my breakfast,” Kim said, expression incensed, annoyed, exasperated.

“I was just having fun. Don’t be such a poor sport,” I answered.

“You eat this bowl of rice krispies and let me know how you like baking soda instead of sugar,” Kim said, still annoyed.

This was my first attempt at deception at the age of eight. Kim was my younger sister by two years. Gradually, over time, motivation to deceive for the thrill it brought would mentally beckon a personal choice. The choice to mislead, frustrate, beguile to witness one’s frustration with bewilderment.

Our mom, a single parent, sluffed it off and told us to hurry up, go to school. I was not disciplined; Kim was not given the satisfaction of having been wronged. Do we brush off occurrences in life based on level of annoyance an incident may cause?

By the way, the only cost is your time to read and perhaps rate or comment. Thanks!

I also just finished story revision to "Misery In The Head".  An international pandemic occurs in the summer of 2052, where all suffer a chronic, splitting, menacing headache. Yeah, a take-off on COVID, but nice to recall what that experience put on us as a people and as persons. Where it will end is anyone's guess but will let you know.

The Feast of Pentecost/Shavuot was this past Tuesday and Wednesday. We celebrate God giving His Word, and God giving us his Spirit, known as a helper and comforter to life's struggle.

Until next visit, so glad you stop by, and please share this blog with your friends and associates.

God be with us always,

I Won't Back Down (classic rock, Tom Petty)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is Thursday, June 6, in my corner of blogland. Year 2024.

Interestingly, this day celebrates a milestone in the U.S. military history as related to WWII. Next week, those who adhere to a Hebraic perspective of faith will recognize that God gave the Torah to His people on Mount Sinai. This occurred within three months of the Children of Israel departing Egypt.

Centuries later, at the Festival of Pentecost or Shavuot in Hebrew, God visited if you will the assembled in Israel by his Spirit enabling messengers to proclaim his Words in their respective tongue. In both cases, God gives something of himself and still is doing so in a myriad of ways!

The New Covenant Scriptures describe this second event in a book titled "Acts Of The Apostles". See the second chapter.

Pentecost or Shavuot along with June 6, being D-Day in Military terms, have in common people being attentive to what was occurring around them; people engaged in hearing and observing the activities occurring around them.

As a result of Pentecost or Shavuot, the message of God's grace and goodness would within two centuries, be expanded to include the entire globe at that time. Arguably, this is occurring today.

This week, I began reading a title by Dr. Jeffrey Seif, "To The Ends Of The Earth". You can find this online at sites like Amazon, GoodReads, and the paid reading site, everand.com.

The author provides us a summary at the end of his second chapter worth tending to.He asserts that early church history was largely influenced through Jewish men and women embracing God's message and being significantly involved in its expansive outreach for some time. See Below from his text:

Chapter 2 Jerusalem-Based Messianic Judaism

In sum, it is to be observed that a vibrant Messianic Jewish movement flourished in Judea before the first Roman war and that it was established there afresh immediately after the debacle. The ancients also note that the movement flourished in Judea till the second Jewish-Roman war. Though there had been a vibrant Jewish expression of Messianic faith, things began to change. Over time, and owing to the Gospel’s expansion to non-Jews in the broader culture, the Empire was “Christianized” by a Roman church that saw itself alone as

representative of the New Chosen People of God! In the wake of this, Messianic Jews were denigrated and displaced, seen only as the reigning church’s ancient vanquished rival, leftover fruits from a condemned system. Jewishness was despised—the message of Israel’s Messiah was framed exclusively in non-Jewish terms and given a non-Jewish expression. This situation prevailed well into the present modern era and is now slowly being addressed by bold women and men bent on investigating legitimate biblical forms of Jewish faith."

Today, let us ask God to enable us to be brave, courageous, decided and steadfast in our God-given convictions. May our lives be such that people notice we can do much because God gives us each the strength to do so.

Happy Summer if you observe this season now; Happy Winter if you on the other hand, are observing this season now.

To those with a faith practice, Happy Pentecost or Shavuot. See your calendars for 2024 for date of this Hebraic Holiday.

Thank you for dropping by. Let's visit often!

Black Water (Doobie Brothers, Acoustic)

Hello Grafted In Readers,

Today is Wednesday, May 29, 2024 in my corner of blogland.

We have a few things to converse about today.

Grafted In Here To Stay

I have decided to keep the "cabin" open as it were for you to drop in anytime. Just wipe your shoes off on the figurative, virtual matt provided at the entry.

I will also be moving to Substack during the next few months. That will be an extension of what you have seen here if visiting a while. I enjoy our current arrangement, and can tell some of you do as well.

Writing Life

I just came off the writing life race track for a while, and am resuming creating short fiction. The racetrack in question is about book promotion and marketing. I am on the verge of working with someone to find comfortable, affordable ways to promote my title(s) more effectively.

My recent created "Menacing Dropoff" story will be in the summer issue of

"New Authors Journal"

available in print from Amazon.com around middle June.

Here is a small snippet of this 1,750 word story.

Summary:  A family man is faced with a choice to go with the flow, or stand up for a cause to which he is impassioned. Here you go:

Menacing Dropoff

David C. Russell

The phrase “just another manic Monday” perfectly described my day. One hand held an Arby’s beef sandwich, and my other navigated the streets as I drove to the city council meeting in Utica, Michigan. The phrase “busy life, happy wife” has occasionally been experienced in my house—but not today.

“Can’t you find a half hour to spend with your sons? Vaughn and Daren will be grown and gone before you know it,” Carolyn said while on the phone.

“I spent Saturday afternoon with the kids,” I fired back. “The water rate issue has become my passion because it affects others, not only me or my family.”

“Be a martyr then, Blake. Go fight for your almighty cause,” she said, tone bordering vehement rage.

City Council

The room in city hall where the Utica City Council met was two-thirds full. The news media had generated interest in the proposed 7% water rate increase. Sources noted the rate increase over the past decade was roughly $75.00 a month based on the daily usage by a family of four in one home. This translated to an estimated $900.00 annually on water. Granted, people use water for bathing, cooking, cleaning, toileting, yard beautification, and washing clothing and motor vehicles.

The climax of the discussion arrived when an elderly gentleman approached the podium using a motorized wheelchair.

He began, “I’ve lived here all my life—82 years. My monthly rent is about one grand. I feed and support myself, the wife, and my grandson on a $2,000 monthly budget.”

This is a work of fiction...

This story came about because a friend, over breakfast, suggested I create something discussing increased water rates. This is one national issue. So, voila!

I'll let you know when the journal is available.

One-year Anniversary

My title, "Human Being Human Doing" turned one-year on May 23rd.

I recommend the EBook version if you want to read some short portraits about human beings whose convictions influenced life and history then, and in some cases now.

The mother of Moses protects her son from genocide;

Miriam of Migdal recovers from chronic anxiety;

Nicodemus or in Hebrew, Nakdiman, is challenged to consider his world view;

A fictitious international symposium is held to celebrate the Festival of Pentecost or Shavuot. One of the panelist succumbs to temptation and medical issues that arise;

The final story or portrait is imagined Judgment Day and the celebrative banquet that follows.

Someone told me this little book is big on encouragement, inspiration, and information.

See:  https://www.books2read.com/mlqXG9

A Final Two Paragraphs

On Tuesday and Wednesday, June 11 and 12, 2024, Jewish faith adherents and in a wider perspective, those sympathetic to this form of spirituality, observe the Feast of Pentecost or Shavuot in Hebrew. The festival celebrates G-d giving the Torah at Mt. Sinai, and centuries later, a visitation by the Holy Spirit to many in Israel there to celebrate this festival, too. We also commemorate the continued "giving of Torah" in our lives and to our world in the present.

One custom is to have a piece or two of cheese-cake and read the story of Ruth from the Bible on the first evening.

For more, look up "Shavuot, My Jewish Learning.com".

Post Title

Black Water, by the Doobie Brothers, is an oldie but goodie in my opinion.

You can find a 2020 version of this song performed while in isolation by this group, the Doobie Brothers. Search through the results on You
Tube

after typing, "Youtube song black water doobie brothers" and pressing enter key.

Of course, press enter to skip the advertising that may occur first off.

Until our next visit, may the presence of Adonai be with us always, and order our life plans and activities.

Now, off to have some hot, black coffee!

Thanks for stopping by, and welcome to you if a newcomer!

Persevere and Persist (life advice)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is Tuesday, May 14, 2024 in my corner of blog-land. How goes it?

I just had a warm visit with a friend whom I will identify as LM. Our conversation included the key words that I'm using as this post's title: Persevere and Persist.

We all face roadblocks throughout life, stop-signs if driving, crosswalks if pedestrian, periods of wait when shopping or eating out, starting small if embarking on something like writing, a new business venture, learning to play a music instrument, income as an adolescent or young adult. Or, it used to be that way...

On Sunday May 12, I played piano at The Voyageur in St. Clair, MI, for patrons as it was Mother's Day here in North America. My song choices ranged 50 years in scope and as they were played, different memories came to mind from respective eras.

I persevered through whatever challenges each era brought. So have you.

I might be right in saying for the most part, things worked out well for both of us despite our separate life experiences.

Simply, keep at it, keep it up, try again, shoot for the moon and you may hit the highest mountain top, etc.

Till next visit, may the presence of G-d be with you always!

I Won't Back Down (classic rock, Tom Petty)

Hello Grafted In Readers,

Thanks to the five of you who have dropped by to visit since last post. Today is Wednesday, April 10 in my corner of blog land.

Have you ever done something that you could take pride in, and for whatever reason, if it was to benefit others, the thing you accomplished went largely unnoticed?

I woke this morning to spend a good hour in quiet solitude just over this very experience. The issue is to make other things in your life front and center, so this occurrence is not robbing you of your joy, your creativity, your attention to the moment in which you now live, and probably a few other prospects.

Perhaps It may well be  Jordan Peterson, Psychiatrist, whom advised compare yourself today with yourself of yesterday. That's a reminder to not compare your success with another but with your own.

Yes, easier said than done; I know...

My 11-month-old title, "Human Being Human Doing" continues to be at reduced price at:

https://books2read.com/u/mlqXG9

till the end of April 2024.

This six-story anthology is select portraits of how people in history have overcome things like: genocide, chronic anxiety, old faith perspective, familial dysfunction, etc.

This EBook version is meant to: be good to our environment, inform, inspire, and encourage those who may read this title. Check it out, please!

I hope you are enjoying your season, or growing through your season!

As to forthcoming newsletter at Substack, I am making slow progress but anticipate a post placement by month's end. Eventually, you will be invited to follow me over there so we can continue our visits.

Meantime, don't back down, give up, quit, throw in the towel, but as Scripture notes, "Adonai is our shepherd; one shall not want for anything. (Psalm 23).

Traveling Shoes (Acoustic Song by Bill Staines)

Hello Grafted In Readers,

I am listening to some acoustic music from Radio Heartland as we visit. In fact, earlier this hour they played the song for which this post is titled.

Bill Staines was a folk singer in the '70s and '80s, who had a pleasant sound, nice lyrics about life's pleasures and some pitfalls, but his legacy remains!

It's the last Monday of March 2024 in my corner of blog land. Much personal growth in writing has occurred, more so behind the scenes since our last visit.

Be careful what you shop for, it may not be the best thing for you, is my take-away.

I am reading, "Let Us Descend" by author Jesmyn Ward. The story is set in the time of slavery existing in the U.S., and is quite a riveting story.

On the writing front, a friend suggested that I work on a story about a group combatting rising water rates. This is an occurrence happening across North America, and in some cases has out-paced our inflation rate around 6 or 7 percent annually.

The story is titled, "Menacing Dropoff" and will be submitted to different venues for potential publication.

I do have a story in the current "New Authors Journal", available in print from Amazon.

Google, "New Authors Journal Spring 2024 Amazon" and consider a copy for yourself. The price is reasonable and great value inside.

Incidentally, my title, "Human Being Human Doing" will be on sale in EBook form through April 2024, starting this weekend, March 30, 2024.

Until our next visit, all the best and may the presence of Yehovah, surround you and yours constantly!

Hello Grafted In Reader,

Today is extraordinary in my corner of blog land, February 29, 2024.

Tomorrow begins the month of March. I particularly like the month of March for the following noted occurrences:

- National Reading Month, U.S.,

- March Madness Tournament, college basketball, U.S.,

- Arrival of Spring and the inkling of warmer days and nights, North America.

How does March stand in your list of enjoyments?

Plans On Moving

Since our last visit nearly three weeks ago, I have decided to explore the possibility of moving to SubStack and even changing the title of the blog there to that assigned my most current book,

"Human Being Human Doing"

Side Note:  https://books2read.com/u/mlqXG9

Back to Visit

I will alert you when my first post appears at SubStack, but am tentatively planning on mid April, 2024.

Books Being Read

My daily trek in life includes a good hour of reading for pleasure, knowledge, and personal sustenance.

For pleasure, I am reading a Fantasy novel by well-liked author, Brandon Sanderson, "Steel Heart".

The book of Psalms, one or two per day, has been for personal sustenance the last two months.

For personal knowledge, the following caught my attention at SubStack:

Transfiguration Sunday: Daniel's Vision

Substack · Lectionary Notes from Christie

Stories Written

The good news is one of my stories, "The Gentleman Caller" has been selected by the editors of New Authors Journal, to appear in the Spring Issue.

It is anticipated to be available in print from Amazon by the end of March 2024.

Other talented writers too, get the opportunity to introduce readers to their respective craft.

Consider, "New Authors Journal, Spring 2024" in your book purchasing power. The price is fairly affordable to many!

Spiritual Thought

"The Lord's Prayer" was a shortened form offered by Yeshua, (Jesus) to his disciples for them to memorize and pray at will. Its text is based on the Amidah, Jewish daily prayer said generally most mornings.

Thank you for dropping by for our visit. I intend to visit again very soon, around April 20, 2024. Do invite a friend to come visit, also.

May the presence of YHVH accompany us today and always.

Rhapsody In Blue (Gershwin)

Hello Grafted In Reader,

I am glad for your visit be it the first time or a seeming innumerable time. Today is Monday, February 12, 2024 in my corner of blog land.

It is also said to be the 100th anniversary for the composition, "Rhapsody In Blue" by the late George Gershwin. Hence, this post is titled to honor this man and his life in music!

This is also a planning session for this blog. I request your comments on the following over the next few weeks.

I am considering broadening the scope of this blog to include a monthly author update or newsletter. Below, is a sample draft of what is envisioned.

Would this be of interest to you, in addition to, or separate from our visits as they have occurred?

Proposed Sample Newsletter

David C. Russell

Welcome

In 1996, John Larson released his musical titled, "Rent." A reflective song within the musical, "Seasons Of Love" points out that one year contains 525600 minutes. Engagement with this newsletter may require a minute amount of minutes on your part, but the content to be encouraging and inspirational, may leave significant impact on the minutes of your active life.

A Personal Snippet

In my fourteen years of writing, three book titles are still available. Altogether titles are categorized as creative nonfiction. Two are anthologies, and the third is my autobiography. In addition, I have general fiction stories in random anthologies and at the website, https://www.spillwords.com/author/davidcrussell The stories at this link are encouraging, realistic, and some inspirational and can be sampled at one's leisure. In common, my writing features Characters who face real challenges tailored to them, reflecting life's realities.

Latest Title

My latest title, "Human Being Human Doing" is a self-anthology of six short stories; characterizations include people from known history: King David, the family of Moses, a Jewish pharisee, a panel for an international webinar, Mary Magdalene and a fictitious person facing Judgment Day. Return To Blog Post

In looking over the views for past blogs, the numbers satisfy me even though they range from single digit to double-digit. I view us as a small group that gather on occasion to encourage, inspire, consider something most ignore.

Do let me know your thoughts via comments!

Until next visit, may the presence of HaShem guard your daily steps and walk.

Stand By Your Man (country standard)

Hello Grafted In Readers,

Today is February 8, 2023 in my corner of blog land.

We are blessed with "mild spring" weather today with temperatures nearing 50 degrees F, or 10 degrees C. As the sun is mostly prominent, it the recipe for spending time outdoors!

This morning, someone sent me a post I had applied to a social media site, namely Facebook, from the Union of Reform Judaism, on the day Donald Trump became the forty-fifth President of the United States.

The point of this post being, we are to hold our leadership up in prayer regardless our feeling about the one in leadership.

It's a lengthy post, but worth reading on occasion, and worth posting here as it is somewhat timely.

I will be back with more news in a couple weeks, but hope you will avail yourself the opportunity to read this essay.

Post Of January 21, 2017

Hello Facebook Friends and Readers,

I am an author and reader by avocation. Living in the USA, today is Inauguration Day of a new national leader, Donald J. Trump. Below, is a piece from the Ten Minutes of Torah, daily email by the Union for Reform Judaism to this occasion. It is something we may all derive benefit from considering:

Our Torah understands that the need for peace and prosperity transcend politics. No matter who’s in power, Torah takes an activist view of prayer and government. Even when we’re unhappy with what's happening, we’re instructed to pray.

The clearest instruction comes from Jeremiah. “Seek the peace of the city…and pray unto God for it.” (Jeremiah 27:9)

The Reform Jewish prayer book Mishkan T’filah offers a prayer for the government, an appeal to prophetic visions of peace and prosperity quoting Isaiah 58, with a focus on the role of citizens in creating a just society. It includes a general prayer: “Grant our leaders wisdom and forbearance. May they govern with justice and compassion.” To supplement this core sentiment, I wrote the prayers shared here, both written in a classic siddur (prayer book) style.

These prayers attempt to answer two seemingly conflicting questions: How can we pray for the success of a government and president who many fear are all too willing to trample on ethics, personal liberties and social welfare programs? Yet, is it possible to bridge the gap between prayers that individuals with widely disparate views might say if specific politics were injected into the prayers? My test: Would these prayers work for any future president and government of the U.S? The answer: Yes.

The Torah teaches us that we must pray for the wisdom of our leaders and the quality of government, no matter our feelings toward specific politicians. Extraordinary times require extraordinary prayers.

For the U.S. President

God of history,

Bless the U.S. President with skill,

To act with inspiration and insight,

Becoming a visionary,

Building our nation and communities

In Your image,

A steward dedicated to justice,

So that our cities and towns

Resonate with compassion and health,

Justice and mercy,

Kindness and peace.

Bless our President

With dedication and foresight,

Fortitude and imagination

To solve the complex issues that threaten our future.

Let the weight of the office

Change him for the good.

Let the institutions of our government

Keep his worst instincts in check.

May he lead us to a time when neighbors embrace

And communities thrive,

A time when liberty and equality

Reign supreme.

Source and Shelter,

Grant safety and security

To all nations and communities,

So that truth and harmony will resound

From the four corners of the earth.

Let the light of wisdom

Shine brightly in the halls of power,

A beacon of hope

For every land and every people.

For Government

יקום פרקן מן שמיא

Yikum purkan min shemaiya

Let deliverance arise from heaven

Bringing justice and enlightenment

To the nations of the earth

And to the leaders of the United States,

חנא וחסדא ורחמי

Chi'neh v'chesteh v’ra’chamai

Bringing grace, love and compassion

To the halls of power,

The seats of government,

The capitals of our world.

יהי רצון מלפניך

Y'hi ratzon milfanecha

May it be Your will

To grant the heads of State

A new vision

For safety and prosperity,

Friendship and cooperation,

So that all may know

The fullness of Your blessings,

In a world of generosity and kindness,

Tranquility and peace.

הנותן תשועה וממשלה לנסיאים

Ha’notein t’shu’ah u’memshalah l’nosi’im

May You who gives redemption and governance to presidents,

Reward us with political leaders

With true vision and deep understanding

Of Your instructions to rebuild

And renew the earth,

So that economic, legal,

Social and environmental justice

May bear fruit

For generations to come.

Still Small Voice "kol demamah"

Hello Grafted In Reader

Today is January 23, 2024 in my corner of blog-land.

I am up before the emergence of dawn, and used the time to start reading a collection of essays by teacher and Rabbi, Raymond Apple of Australia.

Biblical People : Mandelbaum Studies in Judaica ...

Walmart

https://www.walmart.com › Books › All Books

About this result

This is a book of short essays on interesting people, events and themes in the Hebrew scriptures. An earlier book by the same author is New Testament People ...

His first portrait is of the Bible Prophet, Elijah. The phrase "still small voice" also described as a thin silence or quiet whisper is mentioned. HaShem speaks in a still small voice, not always but when so chosen.

When silence fills the room what do you hear?

It's an enlightening question to consider of oneself.

By the way, have you had a chance to look at my book title - "Human Being Human Doing"?  (See previous post)

I am working on a new title, "Moments with David" that are comprised of several personal short vignettes on life and such. I may publish this in late summer, 2024 at the earliest.

Until next visit, enjoy the sound of silence on occasion, kol demamah.

Thanks for stopping by.
